Family activities and resources

Each week during this staying at home time, Children's Ministry will be sending out a video for families to enjoy together. We hope to spark gospel conversations in each home. Please take this time together as a family to focus on what is truly important--a relationship with Jesus and drawing closer to Him!

I have listed many other ideas to draw us all near to Christ.  Please send me videos or pictures of your family, either doing some of the ideas I have shared or ideas your family would like to share.  I am excited to see what God is doing through this trial! Welcome to the new Kids Kit! This Christ-centered discipleship resource is weekly and is designed for Grace Kids ages preschool through elementary. Special needs kids and those with additional needs are included as well. Find the age-appropriate kits below that will fit your children’s needs best. The first lesson will be shared next week.

This tool is to be used as a discipleship opportunity for you with your kids, so make sure to watch the video lesson together. After that feel free to choose and work through any or all of the additional resources available. They encourage learning and discipleship while working through each lesson, and also give ideas to learn throughout the week too.

No matter where you are in your journey as a disciple, we pray that this resource will help encourage you as parents as you seek to disciple the next generation by showing them the amazing and big story of God’s plan for redemption in Christ through each and every Bible story!

**Families with littles ages 2 and under-though these kits are geared towards older kids feel free to use the parts you feel your 2 year old would enjoy and learn from.

On September 8th, Children’s Ministry will begin “TNT Tuesdays” to add a little spark to your week! We are excited to come alongside you as families, as we encourage you to memorize scripture together! Stop under the awning at church (North Liberty campus) between 3:30-4:30 each Tuesday afternoon to receive a “truth” (your memory verse for the week), and a “treat”! Both parents and children will receive a verse card to talk about and memorize together during the week. You’ll also receive an extra verse card to pass along to a friend who you would like to encourage. “Treats” will be available for those that come back the following week with their verse memorized. All ages are welcome!

A couple different staff members from our children’s ministry team will be there each week for prayer, or a quick chat, as you drive by and we will also have a resource cart with books and devotionals available for purchase. We hope that this can bring some consistency and encouragement to your week as we are all still experiencing so many “unknowns” during this time. It is our goal to come alongside you as you train and disciple your children! Can’t wait to see you each Tuesday!

Our next family event will be on Saturday, September 19 from 9:00-11:30am. The fishing derby will be a chance to enjoy God's creation and family time while fishing. Bring your lawn chairs and fishing equipment, and even some friends. Various prizes will be awarded.

The week of August 26

This week's video talks about what good friendship looks like. Take a few minutes to watch the video with your kids and discuss it using the following as a guide.

    • Do true friends help each other lie or cheat? Why or why not?
    • Who has shown you what good friendship looks like?
    • What do you look for in a friend?
    • Talk about how Jesus showed true friendship to his disciples and others around Him.
    • Pray that you would be a good friend to others.

The week of August 20

This week the video reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God and that tithing is a way to give back to Him. Use the following questions to create a discussion with your children.

  • Who provides for your needs?
  • How have you seen God's goodness?
  • Why is tithing an important thing to do?

Last week our community suffered from a horrible storm. Many people are still in the midst of clean up, have no electricity, and some are without a home. As a family, please take time to pray for the people affected by the storm. Reach out to those around you who need help and serve in any way you can. Samaritan's Purse is a gospel based organization that is in Cedar Rapids providing relief. If you are interested in serving or donating, check out their website. Note-you must by 14 years old to volunteer with Samaritan's Purse. Let's not miss out on this opportunity to meet the needs of our community!

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your  heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”  - Deuteronomy 6:4-9

The week of August 10

The discipleship video this week focuses on sharing the good news of Jesus with words and deeds to those around us. Watch with your children and take these actions steps:

  • Pray for open eyes to see those around you who need to see and hear about Jesus
  • Take the second chances that God gives you
  • Choose a tangible way to be the hands and feet of Jesus to someone in your neighborhood who doesn't know Jesus yet
  • Use our Building Faith curriculum and host a small BBC in your yard. Have your kids take part in presenting the lessons or the skits.

The week of July 27

This is the goal of Children's Ministry. We want to equip you as parents to teach your children about Jesus everywhere you go, in whatever you do. To that end, we are going to be sharing a series of object lesson videos with you over the next several weeks. Please watch these with your children and take time afterward for prayer and discussion.

There are two resources that we recommend as great starting points. First, Paul Tripp's book titled Parenting is an excellent resource regardless of the age of your children. You can buy it on Amazon or pick it up at church on Sunday (recommended donation of $10). The second resource is a workbook written by our own Cindy Sulwer. This book is designed for preschool aged children and their parents to work through together. It teaches you how to notice God in the world around you. This will also be available on Sunday. If you do not plan to attend service on Sunday but would like to purchase Cindy's book, please email us and we can work out details to get you a copy.

Flip-flop is the title of this week's video. Watch it with your children and afterward wash each other's feet and talk about how your family can serve one another and your neighbors. Make a list of service ideas, then choose something from the list and do it! Pray with your children, asking God for a servant's heart.

This summer we're offering a "Backyard Bible Club in a box" so each Grace family can do their own Backyard Bible Club (BBC). Our digital 'in a box' version includes all the files and resources you need to host your own BBC. Visit graceb3.org/bbc for more information. Contact Cindy or Natasha with questions or to get signed up to host. Even if you don't feel comfortable having other kids over for this, feel free to do BBC with your own kids.

The week of May 31

Cindy Sulwer, our one and only Children's Ministry Director, brings us a lesson about the greatest commandment in this week's video

This past week our nation has been experiencing a lot of pain. Unfortunately, this pain isn't new to many people. As part of our mission to partner with parents for the gospel, Cindy has written a letter to help us refocus on scripture and examine our thoughts and actions.

The Choice by Max Lucado

IT'S QUIET. It's early. My coffee is hot. The sky is still black. The world is still asleep. The day is coming.

In a few moments the day will arrive. It will roar down the track with the rising of the sun. The stillness of the dawn will be exchanged for the noise of the day. The calm of solitude will be replaced by the pounding pace of the human race. The refuge of the early morning will be invaded by decisions to be made and deadlines to be met.

For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to the day's demands. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I'm free to choose. And so I choose.

I choose love . . .

No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves.

I choose joy . . .

I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance. I will refuse the temptation to be cynical . . . the tool of the lazy thinker. I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings, created by God. I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God.

I choose peace . . .

I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live.

I choose patience . . .

I will overlook the inconveniences of the world. Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I'll invite him to do so. Rather than complain that the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray. Instead of clenching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage.

I choose kindness . . .

I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone. Kind to the rich, for they are afraid. And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me.

I choose goodness . . .

I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be overlooked before I will boast. I will confess before I will accuse. I choose goodness.

I choose faithfulness . . .

Today I will keep my promises. My debtors will not regret their trust. My associates will not question my word. My wife will not question my love. And my children will never fear that their father will not come home.

I choose gentleness . . .

Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.

I choose self-control . . .

I am a spiritual being. After this body is dead, my spirit will soar. I refuse to let what will rot, rule the eternal. I choose self-control. I will be drunk only by joy. I will be impassioned only by my faith. I will be influenced only by God. I will be taught only by Christ. I choose self-control.

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To these I commit my day. If I succeed, I will give thanks. If I fail, I will seek his grace. And then, when this day is done, I will place my head on my pillow and rest.

We will have something for kids and parents too. Sixth graders, since we aren't having our in-person last week of Sunday school, we will hand out the Bibles you usually get before moving on to Student Ministry. Make sure you tell the Children's Ministry person helping you on Sunday if you have a 6th grader.

This week's challenge: Moms, ask your kids to share something funny you've said or done and video their answers. Send the videos to Cindy and she will draw a winner at random. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 19 at 2:00 on Facebook live and will receive a flower delivery (delivery time to be arranged).
*When you send your video to Cindy, please let her know if she can share it in next week's email and on Facebook.

The week of April 5

This week Amanda Chidister, Grace's pre-school coordinator, shared some encouraging words.

Here's a fun family idea to encourage your neighbors--decorate your front door for Easter. You can use painters tape and washable paint to create your design. Check out the Sulwers' time-lapse video. After you decorate your door, go for a family drive to check out your neighbors' doors.

If you need paint to decorate your front door or if you want other Easter crafts, they're available now at Grace's east wing door--swing by and grab some! Bring along small containers to squeeze the paint into-we recommend raiding your recycle bin for these containers. Please use the wipes provided before and after you open the bins.

Looking for other fun Easter activities? Check out last week's Easter activities ideas. If you don't have a printer at home, please contact the church office and they will send you a printed copy in the mail.

The week of March 29

This year we've been handing out a monthly calendar on Sunday mornings with daily family activities. Since we can't hand it out in person, we have attached it for you to download at home.

We encourage you to take time each day to reach out to someone in your life whom you haven't talked to in awhile. Spend time in prayer and ask God whom you should touch base with. Send a card in the mail, send a text, use the Marco Polo app, or call the person on the phone. Let's remember to be the hands and feet of Jesus even when we can't be with others in person.

This week's activities include:

  1. Monthly calendar cards (.PDF)
  2. Easter Activities for your family (.PDF)

The week of March 22

Each week during this staying at home time, Children's Ministry will be sending out a video for families to enjoy together. We hope to spark gospel conversations in each home. Please take this time together as a family to focus on what is truly important--a relationship with Jesus and drawing closer to Him!

I have listed many other ideas to draw us all near to Christ.  Please send me videos or pictures of your family, either doing some of the ideas I have shared or ideas your family would like to share.  I am excited to see what God is doing through this trial!
