Who do you say Jesus is?

A devotion by Pastor Brooks

And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30 And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him
Mark 8:27-30

Who do you say Jesus is? It is without dispute that Jesus created a stir during his three years of public ministry. Everyone had an opinion. It is hard to ignore someone who did what he did and said what he said. Some said he was a prophet, some Elijah, some even thought he was his cousin John the Baptist. I find it curious his disciples did not mention that some thought he was a false prophet. Perhaps it was too early in his ministry, and he had not pushed enough buttons yet.

Today the opinions are just as diverse. I have heard it claimed Jesus was a good teacher, a great man, a great prophet, a spirit guide, a revolutionary, and the Son of God. You will even find some modern skeptics who deny Jesus even existed. They have managed to muster enough faith to cast the mountain of historical evidence into the sea to their own eventual peril.

Who do you say he is? Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” Christ is the Greek word for messiah or anointed one. Who do you say he is? More importantly, what will you do? Will you follow him? Will you turn from your sin and worship him, or will you live your life as if he is just another dead guy a few people look up to?

Go—right now—and tell him your fears, hopes, dreams, and hang-ups. Ask him to reveal himself to you as Christ. Worship him.
