What would Jesus do?

A devotion by Pastor Brooks

Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And he said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And he looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.
Mark 3:1–6

Do you remember the WWJD bracelets? The idea behind the bracelet was to remind the owner to act like Jesus would in any given situation. Feeling tempted? Ask yourself what would Jesus do. Uncertain about what fork in the road to take? Ask yourself what would Jesus do. Jesus always did the will of his Father, and he always loved to the fullest. But what if a situation arose where doing what you think Jesus would do causes you to violate your understanding of what the Bible says is right? If you find yourself in this dilemma you don’t know what Jesus would do, don’t understand the Bible, or both.

Jesus' frustrating encounter with the Pharisees revealed a condition far more serious than that of the man with the withered hand. Pride. They longed for the awaited messiah but believed he must conform to their understanding of who their messiah would be. Jesus healed on the Sabbath; he must be in sin. Case closed.

We see the Pharisees are wrong, but what about when we disagree with a brother or sister's understanding of the Bible? What if we are wrong and our pride and ignorance are preventing us from understanding God’s word? Ask the Lord of the Sabbath to heal your mind and heart so you can love as he loved, even if you have to do so on the sabbath.
